The Far West region spans to 786 km northwest of Adelaide sharing Council boundaries with the District Council of Ceduna, the District Council of Streaky Bay, the Wudinna District Council and Ananga Pitjantjatjara Lands in the north east, with a combined estimated population of 6974.
Ceduna has a number of Indigenous homelands situated within 20–30 minutes of the town. The council area has the highest percentage of Aboriginal people of all local government areas in South Australia, with the population currently standing at 24.8% (911) of the population. A number of Aboriginal communities in adjacent unincorporated areas rely on the available services in Ceduna.
The regional economy is extremely diverse with the industries including, fishing, aquaculture, agriculture, retail trade, construction, education and training, health and community services and mining.
Situated on the West Coast of the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia the region is surrounded by some of the most spectacular and unique coastal attractions and experiences and cliffs bordered by isolated bushland. The region caters for an estimated 240,000 tourists passing through every year. The area’s attractions include the marine environment, fishing and popular whale watching and is a gateway to the Flinders and Eyre Highways and the Nullarbor Plain.
